Kelso
A border town on the river Tweed, at the meeting place of the Tweed and the Teviot. It contains the ruins of the Tironesian Abbey, founded in 1428 by David I. Nearby Floors Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Roxburghe. On 8th May 1787, during his Border tour, Burns visited Kelso and recorded in his Journal: 'Breakfast at Kelso; charming situation of Kelso; fine bridges over Tweed; enchanting views and prospects on both sides of the river, particularly the Scotch side.' The bridge which took Burns's fancy was swept away int the great Border flood of the 26th October 1797, and was replaced by Rennie's five-arched bridge between 1800 and 1803.
