Hyslog, Mrs 'Meg'
Landlady of the Globe Tavern in Dumfries which, Burns said in a letter to George Thomson in 1796m 'for these many years has been my Howff'. Her niece was Anna Park, who bore Burns an illegitimate daughter, Elizabeth. Burns referred to Mrs Hyslop always as 'Meg'. Her husband, William, was the landlord. The story is told that, on one occasion, Burns forgot to order dinner for himself, Nicol and Masterton. Meg produced a tup's head, which she and her husband were going to have themselves. Nicol, it seems,'fined' Burns for his fault by commanding a grace. Burns produced: "O Lord, when hunger pinches sore, Do thou stand us in stead, And send us from thy bounteous store, A tup or wether head. Amen'
When they had eaten, Burns was 'ordered' to return thanks. This brought forth: "O Lord, since we have feasted thus, Which we so little merit, Let Meg now take away the flesh, And Jock bring in the spirit. Amen."
A variant of this is to be found in the Wallace-Chambers edition, entitled 'Grace after Meat'. "Lord, Thee we thank, and Thee alone For temporal gifts we little merit! Ar present we will ask no more Let William Hyslop bring the spirit."
