Humphry, James (1755-1884)
A Mauchline mason suuposed to be the subject of the epitaph 'On a Noisy Polemic'. Humphry was employed both at Lochlea and Mossgiel. He first brought himself to Burns's notice because he had some book knowledge, and spoke well. But he frequently engaged in arguments in which he rarely had enough knowledge to support himself, and so earned Burns's description: "Below thir stanes lie Jamie's banes [these O Death, it's my opinion Thou ne'er took such a bleth'ran bitch, Into thy dark dominion!"
Humohry, however, was reputed to have been pleased that he had been the subject of Burns's muse! According to Cunningham, he loved 'to talk of Burns and of the warm debates between them on Effectual Calling and Free Grace'. He died in an almshouse at Failford.
