Howden, Francis (d. 1848)
An Edinburgh jeweller who, in 1792, was appointed goldsmith and medallist for Scotland by the Prince of Wales. Burns from 'St James's Square Noon 2d Attic Story', sent him 'a small shade to set', requesting that it be ready by the following evening, for a lover on the verge of matrimony: 'The Parties, one of them at least, is a very particular acquaintance of mine; the honest lover... Let me conjure you, my friend, by the unloosed cestus of Venus; by the lighted torch of Hymen, that you will have the locket finished by the time mentioned.' There is no other record of friendship between Burns and Howden, except this letter of December 1787.
