Hay, Charles (1747 — 1811)
The son of James Hay of Cocklaw, he was admitted to the Bar at the age of 21. When raised to the Bench in 1806, he took the title of Lord Newton. He held the office of major and muster master general in the Crochallan Fencibles. Lord Cockburn said that Hay was famed for 'law, paunch, whist, claret and worth', though he had no taste for literature. His friendship with Burns was presumably social, although on 24th December 1787, Burns sent him a copy of 'On the Death of the late Lord President', with the comment: 'These kind of subjects are much hackneyed; and besides, the wailings of the rhyming tribe over the ashes of the Great, are damnably suspicious and out of all character for sincerity. These ideas damp'd my Muse's fire; however I have done the best I could...'
