Hamilton, Charlotte (1763 - 1806)

She was the elder daughter of John Hamilton of Kype, a Mauchline lawyer, by his second wife. On the death of her father, she and the second family moved to Harvcieston, near Dollar, the home of the writer John Tait, husband of her maternal aunt. She was a half sister of Gavin Hamilton of Mauchline. Burns first met her when he made a day's visit to Harvieston on 27th August 1787, and was much struck by her beauty. When he wrote to Gavin Hamilton to describe Charlotte and her brothers and sister at Harvieston, the poet called her: 'not only beautiful, but lovely. Her form is elegant; her features not regular, but they have the smile of sweetness, and the settled complacency of good nature in the highest degree... Her eyes are fascinating; at once expressive of good sense, tenderness and a noble mind.' Together, they rode to see the Falls of Devon. Burns's second visit to Harvieston was with Dr James Adair, who accompanied him on his tour of October 1787. Burns celebrated Charlotte's beauty with 'The Banks of the Devon', which appeared in the Scots Musical Museum the following year.

Dr Adair also admired Charlotte, who, indeed, became his wife in 1789. They had 5 children. Charlotte returned to Edinburgh after her husband's death, and died there.
