Guilford, Frederick, Lord North (1732 92)
Son of the 1st Earl of Guilford, educated at Eton and Christchurch. At 22 he was elected Member of Parliament for Banbury. After holding several offices, he followed Grafton as George III's chief minister in 1770, holding office throughout the American War. He counselled peace, but was persuaded by the king to retain office although he knew thewar to be hopeless. He insisted on resigning, however, on the news of Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown in 1782. In April the following year he formed a coalition with Fox under the nominal premiership of the Duke of Portland, but the Coalition Ministry went out of office on Fox's India Bill the following December, and North gave up politics. He is 'Guilford good' in Burns's 'A Fragment'.
