Grieve, William
One of the freemasons who made Burns and Ainslie Royal Arch Masons of St Abb's Lodge. Burns was admitted 'gratis' and they 'considered themselves honoured by having a man of such shining abilities for one of their companions'. Ainslie had to pay a guinea. Burns described Grieve in his Journal of the Border Tour as 'a joyous, warmhearted, clever fellow takes a hearty glass, and sings a good song'. His brother Robert was described as his 'partner in trade, a good fellow, but says little'. William Grieve's attachment to his family was such that when he was out 'which by the bye is often the case, he cannot go to bed till he sees if all his sisters are sleeping well.'
