Gracie, James (1756? 1814)
Born at New Abbey, Kirkcudbright, he became manager of the bank at Dumfries. A warm friendship grew up between him and Burns, who complimented him in an epigram on his becoming Dean of Guild of Dumfries: "Gracie, thou art a man of worth, O, be thou Dean for ever! May he be damn'd to Hell henceforth Who fauts thy weight or measure!"
He was for twenty years a magistrate of Dumfries, and a captain in the Dumfries Volunteers. Latterly his fortunes were reversed. He took up accountancy, but died bankrupt. Burns wrote from Brow eight days before he died, thanking Gracie for the offer of an airing in his carriage.
