Gordon of Balmaghie, Thomas (d 1806)
A son of William Gordon of Campbelton, he bought Balmaghie estate in 1786. He married Agnes Augusta Dempster, a daughter of John Dempster of Dunnichen, by whom he had a large family, some of whom had distinguished careers. He was the Tory opponent of Patrick Heron of Kerroughtree when they contested the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright in February 1795. Gordon, himself a man of property, was supported by his uncle, Murray of Broughton, one of the wealthiest landowners in the South of Scotland. The Earl of Galloway was also favouring him. Burns wrote several election ballads in favour of his friend Heron, whose political views agreed with his own. In the first ballad, the poet refers to Gordon as: "A beardless boy comes o'er the hills Wi's uncle's purse an' a' that..."
Gordon lost the election.
