Goldie, John (1717 1809)
John Goldie (or Goudie) was the son of the miller at Craigmill, on Cessnock Water. When only 14, he made a working model of a mill. He moved to Kilmarnock, where he set up as a cabinet maker. He later became a wine merchant, but continued his scientific and theological investigations. His Essays on various Important Subjects, Moral and Divine, popularly known as 'Goudie's Bible', was an attempt to distinguish 'true from false religion'. It appeared in1780, and became widely popular. 6 years later, he published The Gospel Recovered from its Captive State, which established him as the opponent of the Auld Licht order he had supported as a younger man. In 1808 he published Conclusive Evidence Against Atheism. He lost money in mining speculations towards the close of his life. Being in Mauchline, he called on Burns at Mossgiel, and invited the poet to visit him at Kilmarnock. Goldie became one of the sureties to the printer, John Wilson, for the publication of the Kilmarnock Edition. In the 'Epistle to John Goldie', Burns begins: "O Gowdie, terror o' the Whigs, Dread o' blackcoats and reverend wigs! Sour bigotry on his last legs Girns an' looks back, Wishing the ten Egyptian plagues May seize you quick..."
