George IV (1762 1830)
As Prince of Wales he was referred to by Burns in 'The Bonnie Lass of Albanie' as 'a witless youth' who was usurping Albany's place. Soon after attaining his majority, the Prince had accumulated debts to the amount of half a million pounds. In 1785 he secretly married his mistress, Mrs Fitzherbert, but had later to repudiate her when, because of his profligate behaviour and increasing debts, he was forced to marry his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick. They separated formally after the birth of their only child, Caroline. When George III became incurably insane in 1811, the Prince of Wales was appointed Regent, succeeding to the throne in 1820. As George IV, he was the first Sovereign to come to Scotland since the visit of Charles II in 1650. Sir Walter Scott stage managed his enthusiastic reception. This visit, in 1822, included the appearance of the stout monarch in a kilt.
