Gage, General Thomas (1721 87)
Governor of Massachusetts, he held Boston somewhat unaggressively against the rebels in 1775, and was reinforced by Sir William Howe, John Burgoyne and Sir Henry Clinton. The main credit for the Bunker Hill victory went to Howe, who succeeded Gage as Commander in Chief in October, hence Burns's reference to 'Poor Tommy Gage' in 'A Fragment' ('When Guilford good').
