Fullarton, Colonel William (1754 1808)
Son of a botanist, William Fullarton of Fullarton, Dundonald, Ayrshire, Fullarton was educated at Edinburgh University and travelled extensively. He made a European tour in the care of Patrick Brydone. Later, Fullarton entered the army, and became a colonel in the 98th Regiment. With the outbreak of the Dutch War, the regiment was sent to the Cape of Good Hope, and then to India, where he also served as a diplomat. At the beginning of the French War in 1793, he raised the Regiment of the 23rd Light Dragoons, known as Fullarton's Light Horse. He became Governor of Trinidad in 1802. He published in 1793 an Account of Agriculture in Ayrshire, and A View of English Interests in India. Burns made a complimentary reference to him in 'The Vision'. Together with a friend, the Colonel visited Burns at Ellisland in 1791. In a letter which Burns sent to him from Ellisland on 3rd October 1791, along with some poems, Burns told Fullarotn: 'I am ambitious, covetously ambitious of being known to a gentleman whom I am proud to call my Countryman: a gentleman who was a Foreign Embassador [sic] as soon as he was a Man; and a Leader of Armies as soon as he was a Soldier; and that with an eclat unknown to the usual minions of a Court... If the gentleman who accompanied you when you did me the honor of calling on me is with you, I beg to be respectfully remembered to him.' Burns signed himself Fullarton's 'highly obliged and most devoted servant'. Fullarton married the elder daughter of the 5th Lord Reay in 1792, and had one daughter.
