Fergusson of Craigdarroch, Mrs Alexander
Burns wrote a lament for her son, who died at the age of 18 or 19, 'Mrs Fergusson of Craigdarroch's Lamentation for the death of her Son'. But the poet made double use of this poem, having also sent it to his early patroness, Mrs Alexander Stewart of Afton on the death of her only son, Alexander Gordon Stewart, who died at Military Academy at Strasburg in December 1787, aged 16. Allan Cunningham claimed that he possessed a copy of the 'Lament' with a note by Burns, saying: 'the Mother's Lament was composed, partly with a view to Mrs Fergusson of Craigdarroch, and partly to the worthy patroness of my early unknown muse, Mrs Stewart of Afton.'
