Ferguson, Sir Adam (1771 1854)
Eldest son of Professor Adam Ferguson, he was an intimate friend of Sir Walter Scott. He entered the army, serving with Wellington in the Peninsular War. He was taken prisoner in 1812 for six years. On his release he settled near Abbotsford at Huntly Burn. He became the deputy keeper of the Scottish regalia, and was knighted by George IV in 1822. He gave a similar account of the meeting between Burns and Scott to that given by Scott himself. See Ferguson, Dr Adam
