Erskine, John Francis (1701 - 1825)
Afterwards 27th Earl of Mar and 12th Lord Erskine. He and Burns never met, but when a rumour reached Erskine's notice that the poet had been dismissed from his Excise post because of his radicalism, Erskine wrote to Robert Riddell offering to lead a subscription on Burns's behalf. Burns was deeply moved by the gesture and wrote to thank Erskine on 13th April 1793.
