Elliot, George Augustus (1717 90)
Made Lord Heathfield in recognition of his services in defending Gibraltar in 1782, after it had been laid siege to for three years by the Spaniards. Burns makes the old soldier mention him in the song 'I am a son of Mars', in 'The Jolly Beggars Cantata': "Yet let my country need me, with Elliot to head me, I'd clatter on my stumps at the sound of a drum."
