Edgar, John (d. 1816?)
An accountant to the Board of Excise and Salt Duties in Edinburgh. His name does not appear on the almanac list of Excise officers after 1816. Burns wrote to him from Dumfries on 25th April 1795, protesting against incurring censure over ['the Wine Account of this district not being sent in.' He explained the reason for the delay his handing back of the District to Findlater, for whom he had been acting while Findlater was indisposed: 'This, Sir, is a plain state of Fact; and if I must still be thought censurable, I hope it will be considered that this Officiating Job being my first, I cannot be supposed to be completely master of all of the etiquette of the business. 'If my supposed neglect is to be laid before the Honourable BOARD, I beg you will have the goodness to accompany the complain with this letter.'
