Dunn, Jean
Joseph Train related an incident in which Jean Dunn was said to be involved with Burns in his capacity as an officer of the Excise. When Burns and his fellow officer Robertson entered Jean's house, suspecting her of illicit trading in Kirkpatrick-Durham, Jean stepped out, leaving only the servant and her own little daughter in the house. When asked if there had been any brewing done, the servant answered to the contrary, saying they had no icence to brew. Whereupn the child exclaimed, 'That's no true, the muckle black kist is fou' o' the bottles o' y'll that my mother sat up a' night brewing for the fair.' 'Does that bird speak?' said Robertson, pointing to one hanging in a cage. 'There is no use for another speaking bird in this house,' said Burns, 'while that little lassie is to the fore. We are in a hurry just now; but as we return from the fair, we'll examine the muckle black kist.' On their return, needless to say, the kist was empty. Train was, of course, an enthusiastic gossip. It is up to the reader to put his own value on his stories.
