Dunlop, Anthony (1775 1828)
7th son of Burns's friend, Mrs Dunlop. He went to sea when he was 12 in 1787. In a letter of 10th April 1790, Burns suggested to Anthony's mother that the boy possessed: 'a purity, a tenderness, a dignity, an elegance of soul, which are of no use, nay, in some degree, absolutely disqualifying, for the truly important business of making a man's way into life.' Anthony Dunlop spent the earlier part of his life in the merchant navy, married Ann Cunningham, daughter of the Collector of Customs in Irvine, in 1803, and after a time, settled as a tenant farmer in the Isle of Man. There, he bought a small estate, which he named Ellerslie, after the birthplace of Sir William Wallace. He became involved in litigation, however, and got himself heavily into debt. On 29th June 1828, he committed suicide in an Edinburgh hotel.
