Dumouriez, Charles Francois (1739 1823)
Born at Cambrai, he entered the French army before the Revolution, although he later fought for it. He won the battle of Valmy, that decisive victory against the German and Austrian armies who were intent on restoring the monarchy. He also won the battle of Jemmapes, and conquered Belgium. Thereafter he deserted the army of the Republic on 5th April 1793, and was only prevented by accident from betraying his troops into the hands of the enemy. He went back to the Royalists. He ultimately settled in England, where he died. Burns, in common with most British people, anglicised his name to Dumourier. Burns wrote his poem, 'An Address to General Dumouriez', and included the lines: "How does Dampierre do? Aye, and Beurnonville too? Why did they not come along with you, Dumouriez?"
Dampierre was one of the generals whom Dumouriez thought were going to desert with him, but who did not, in fact, do so. Nor did Beurnonville, an emissary of the Convention.
