Dumbarton
A royal burgh on the Clyde, and formerly the ancient capital of Strathclyde. At the end of his short West Highland tour, made during the summer of 1787, Burns visited Dumbarton. On 29th June, he was presented with his Burgess ticket, made out and signed by the Town Clerk, John McAulay, who entertained the poet at his home, Levengrove House, where Burns may possibly have stayed. The Burgess ticket, which now hangs in the Municipal Buildings, declares that Mr Burns of Ayrsire, compeared and was 'admitted and received a Burgess and guild brother with power to use and enjoy the privileges and immunities thereto belonging.' On the reverse side is the burgh coat of arms. The Burgess ticket was presented to Dumbarton in 1923 by Mrs Burns Gowring, a great-granddaughter to the poet. According to a 19th Century tradition. Burns's name does not appear in the Burgh Roll because of the opposition of the parish minister, the Rev James Oliphant, formerly of Kilmarnock, to his acceptance as a freeman.
