Dudgeon, William (c. 1753 1813)
Born at Tyningham, a Berwickshire poet of local reputation whose song 'Up among yon cliffy rocks', enjoyed contemporary popularity. The Ainslies invited him to Berrywell when Burns was their guest. Burns called Dudgeon 'a poet at times', and thought him to have 'a worthy, remarkable character, a good deal of penetration, a great deal of information, some genius and extreme Modesty.' All his life a farmer, he died at Newmains, Whitekirk.
