Don Manuscript
A collection of Burns's letters which he made in 1787 for Lady Henrietta Don, elder daughter of the 13th Earl of Glencairn, and sister of the poet's patron, James, the 14th Earl. It was forwarded to Lady Don under cover of a letter dated 26th March 1787: 'I have here sent you a parcel of my epistolary performances... I might have altered or omitted some things in these letters; perhaps I ought to have done so; but I wished to show you the Bard and his style in their native colors.' The letters are, of course, all examples of his early style, but the fact that he made the collection shows that even in his Edinburgh days he took his letter-writing seriously. It is now in the Library of Edinburgh University, and known as the Laing MSS.
