Davidson, John (1728 1806)
He is generally supposed to have been the prototype of 'Souter Johnnie' in 'Tam o' Shanter'. He lived at Glenfoot of Ardlochan, near the farm called Shanter. Latterly he lived in Kirkoswald, where he was buried. A shoe-maker to trade, he was a man known for his wit and jests. He married Anne Gillespie in 1763, who at one time had been in service to Gilbert Broun or Brown, Burns's maternal grandfather. The poet was a frequent visitor at their home. Davidson's mull (for snuff) is preserved in the Burns Monument in Edinburgh.
