Dalziel, Professor Andrew (1742 1806)
Professor of Greek in Edinburgh University. Burns referred to the 'delicacy' of his 'taste' in a letter written from Ellisland on 20th January 1789, to Professor Dugald Stewart. Burns presented a volume of Fergusson's poems to Mrs Dalziel inscribed on the fly leaf with the lines beginning: "Ah, woe is me, my mother dear"
In a letter to Sir Robert Liston, dated 25th January 1787, the professor described Burns: '... We have got a poet in town just now, whom everybody is taking notice of a ploughman from Ayrshire a man of unquestionable genius, who has produced admirable verses, mostly in the Scottish dialect, though some of them are nearly in English. He is a fellow of strong common sense, and by his won industry has read a good deal of English, both prose and verse... He behaves wonderfully well; very independent in his sentiments, and has none of the mauvaise honte about him, though he is not forward.' Andrew Dalziel was a native of West Lothian. He held his chair for 34 years, from 1772 to 1806. In 1785 he was appointed librarian of the University. He began to write a history of Edinburgh University, but died before he could complete the work.
