Curtis, Rear Admiral Sir Roger (1746 1816)
Son of Roger Curtis of Downton, Wiltshire, and said to be descended from the Roger Curtis who served aboard the Swiftsure and was killed at Algiers in 1662. Curtis entered the Navy in 1762, and became involved in a controversy arising out of his action in fleeing before the French towards the end of 1780. But thereafter, for more than 18m months he played an important part in the succour and relief of Gibraltar, particularly in the destruction of the Spanish floating batteries on 13th September 1782. Burns mentioned him in the soldier's song from 'The Jolly Beggar's Cantata': "I lastly was with Curtis, among the floating batt'ries." Curtis was president of the court martial which tried and acquitted Lord Gambier on a charge of excess of caution. By his wife Sarah Brady, Curtis had a daughter and two sons, one of whom became an admiral.
