Crawford of Cartsburn, Thomas (1741 91)
A country gentleman, whose estate lay near Greenock. He travelled a good deal on the Continent and was a warm admirer of Burns. They had a common friend in Richard Brown. Crawford wrote the poet a cheerful letter from Cartsburn on 16th March 1788, inviting Burns to stay with him and offering to send a servant and horse for him. Burns, however, seems to have had too much on his mind his taking of the lease of Ellisland, and the death of his and Jean Armour's second set of twins to have any inclination for making new friends at that particular moment.`
