Cornwallis, Charles (1738 1805)
Later first Marquis, Cornwallis fought with distinction at Philadelphia, and was appointed British commander in Carolina. He defeated Gates in August 1780, and Nathanial Greene in March 1781. He surrendered at Yorktown 18th October 1781. He is mentioned in Burns's 'Fragment' of 1784, "When Guilford good," which inspired Blair to remark that 'Burns's politics always smell of the smithy'.
