Clinton, Sir Henry (1738 95)
Only son of Admiral, the Honourable George Clinton, Governor of Newfoundland and later of New York. He quickly rose to the rank of Major-General, and having accompanied Generals Howe and Burgoyne to America during the War of Independence, distinguished himself at Bunkers' Hill. He became Howe's Second in Command, and finally took over command of the British forces in America from Howe. When his own Second in Command, Lord Cornwallis, capitulated at Yorktown in 1781, thereby finally losing the American colonies, Clinton resigned and returned to England. He was voted M P for Boroughbridge in 1772 through the influence of his cousin, the second Duke of Newcastle. In 1790 he entered Parliament again, this time as representative for Launceston. He died at Gibraltar, where he was Governor. He and General Howe are both praised for their generalship by Burns in his 'Address of Beelzebub'.
