Chalmers, William
A Writer and Notary Public in Ayr, who drew up the notarial intimation of the assignation of Burns's property in favour of Gilbert, his brother, when the poet meditated flight to Jamaica. At the same time, Chalmers asked Burns to write a poem for him to present to his young lady. The result was the poem, 'To Willie Chalmers' Sweetheart', in which Burns humorously advances the merits of his friend's amorous cause and gives the girl this advice: "Some gapin, glowrin countra laird May warsle for your favour; May claw his lug, and straik his beard, And hoast up some palaver: My bonie maid, before ye wed Sic clumsy-witted hammers, Seek Heaven for help, and barefit skelp Awa wi' Willie Chalmers."
In November 1786, Chalmers was called upon by Burns in a humorous mock-mandate ('In the Name of the NINE. Amen!') to burn an enclosed 'bawdy, nefarious, abominable and wicked song or ballad'. He sent Chalmers copies of some of his poems, including the 'Address to Edinburgh'.
