Catrine

Catrine House, a mile south west of Catrine town was the seat of Professor Dugald Stewart, the philosopher and of his father before him, Burns's 'learned sire and son'. The small town of Catrine lies in the parish of Sorn, on the river Ayr, about two and a half miles from Mauchline. Here in 1787, Claud Alexander of Ballochmyle, brother of Burns's 'Bonnie lass o' Ballochmyle', established a cotton factory in partnership with David Dale. They also set up a cotton mill village, the growth of which drove Professor Dugald Stewart to dispose of Catrine House.

Burns dined with Stewart at Catrine House on 23rd October 1786, and there met Lord Daer, son of the Earl of Selkirk, the outcome of which was the 'Lines on meeting Lord Daer'. Stewart was the first of the Edinburgh intellectuals to take Burns up socially. The poet sent him copies of new poems on several occasions.

A monument to Stewart by Playfair stands on the Calton Hill, Edinburgh.
