Cardonnel, Adam de (d 1820)
Afterwards Cardonnel-Lawson, he had studied medicine, but gave it up to concentrate on his love of antiquities and numismatics. He met Captain Grose when he came to Scotland in 1789, and helped him in his investigations. Shortly afterwards he left Scotland for Northumberland. His principal work was Numismata Scotiae. When Burns did not know Grose's whereabouts, and wanted to effect an introduction between the Captain and Professor Dugald Stewart, he sent his letter to Grose care of Adam de Cardonnel, who lived in Edinburgh at the time. He also enclosed a copy of the humorous 'Verses on Captain Grose.'
