Cambusdoon Manuscript
A collection of 20 pages, the first 16 of which are in Burns's handwriting. The pages in Burns's hand contain, 'The Birks of Aberfeldy', 'Written in the Hermitage at Taymouth', 'Written at the Falls of Foyers', 'The Humble Petition of Bruar Water', 'Elegy on Sir John Hunter Blair', 'Andrew and his Cutty Gun, composed at Auchtertyre on Miss Euphemia Murray of Lentrose', 'On Scaring some Waterfowl in Loch Turity', and a poem not composed by Burns, 'Here's to the King, Sir'. This last poem, according to Chambers, was probably written about 1718, in view of the allusion it contains to Charles XII of Sweden. At the top of the page containing it, but now nearly obliterated are the words, 'from the mind' in Burns's handwriting, suggesting either that he wrote it down from memory, or touched up the Jacobite song. Some of the other poems contain earlier variants of the text which appeared in the 1793 edition. The last 4 pages contain a poem to the memory of Burns by a Mrs Allardyce, wife of the minister of Forgue, Aberdenshire, and dated 1818. She may once have owned the collection, which also contains a short catalogue, not in Burns's handwriting, of some of his poems to Clarinda and other pieces.
