Bruar Water
Burns visited Bruar Falls during his Highland tour in 1787. The Bruar, a tributary of the Garry, flows a few miles west of Blair Atholl, near the main Perth to Inverness road. Burns noted: 'In Athole. Exceedingly picturesque and beautiful, but the effect is much impaired by the want of trees and shrubs.' When he reached Inverness, Burns addressed the Duke of Athole, through whose estate the Bruar flowed with 'The Humble Petition of Bruar Water': "Let lofty firs, and ashes cool, My lowly banks o'erspread, And view, deep-bending in the pool, Their shadows' wat'ry bed: Let fragrant birks, in woodbines drest, My craggy cliffs adorn; And, for the little songster's nest The close embow'ring thorn." The Duke later acted upon the poet's suggestion.
