Boyd, Thomas
A mason and contractor in Dumfries. He build Burns's farmhouse at Ellisland. As may be seen from two of the poet's three letters to him, he took his time over the operation. Writing from his temporary home, Isle, on 8th February 1789, Burns begs him to 'set as many hands to work as possible' as he is 'distressed with the want' of his house in 'a most provoking manner'. From the same address on 1st March, Burns protested he was 'a good deal surprised at finding my house still lying like Babylon in the prophecies of Isiah'. The house, when more or less finished in June 1790, was the first real home to which Burns was able to take his wife and family. The same year, Boyd was employed as architect for the new bridge over the Nith at Dumfries.
