Little is known of this 'gentleman of a tolerable decent estate in the neighbourhood' whose unfulfilled engagement Burns mentions in a letter to Alexander Dalziel, written at Ellisland on 5th October 1790.

He was twice Provost of Dumfries, from 1782-4 and again 1790-2.
