Belles of Mauchline, The
Six Mauchline girls mentioned in the song 'O leave novels, ye Mauchline belles'. They were Betty Miller, Jean Markland, Jean Smith, Helen Miller, Christina Morton and Jean Armour (See under each name). The song warned the belles to beware of the amatory actos of 'Rob Mossgiel', but at least one of the belles failed to heed the warning. The song was first published in part by Currie in 1800 and appeared in the Scots Musical Museum in 1803. Burns's title for the tune was 'Donald Blue', which Dick failed to trace. The tune in the Museum is described by Dick as 'evidently a pipe tune of good Scottish type'. 'To a Louse' was reputed to have been written about one of the belles.
