Bannockburn

A village near Stirling on the river Forth, and the scene of Robert the Bruce's victory over the English army of King Edward II, in 1314. Burns in company with Nicol, visited Bannockburn on Sunday 26th August 1787. The entry in Burns's Journal reads: 'Came on to Bannockburn — shown the old house where James III was murdered — the field of Bannockburn — the hole where glorious Bruce set his standard.'

Cunningham fabricated a fervent piece of romantic day-dreaming, wholly out of style with the rest of the Journal, but which is sometimes printed as if genuine. Cunningham apparently took his text from the remark in Burns's letter to Robert Muir, dated 26th August 1787: 'This morning I knelt at the tomb of Sir John the Graham, the gallant friend of the immortal Wallace; and two hours ago I said a fervent prayer for Old Caledonia over the hole in a blue whinstone, where Robert de Bruce fixed his royal standard on the banks of Bannockburn.'

Sir John the Graham is buried at Falkirk.
