Ballochmyle
A district in Ayrshire, near Mauchline, mentioned in 'The Lass of Ballochmyle', and in 'Farewell to Ballochmyle'. Burns said that this latter poem was written when Sir John Whitefoord, a partner in the banking establishment of Douglas, Heron & Co., Ayr, lost his fortune when the bank failed in 1772. The Maria of this poem was Whitefoord's daughter, Mary Anne.
