Anderson, Dr James (1739-1808)
Born at Hermiston, Midlothian, Anderson received his Doctorate in Law from Aberdeen University in 1780. He was interested in the advancement of agriculture, and an industrious journalist on this and other topics. Between 22nd December 1790 and 21st January 1794, he edited a literary and scientific magazine, The Bee, which achieved considerable distinction. Anderson invited Burns to contribute to The Bee, but although the poet thought of sending him his 'Lament for the Earl of Glencairn', he never contributed anything. The Bee did publish a letter by Burns to the Earl of Buchan, but it is supposed by Ferguson to have been sent in by the Earl himself, or by one of Burns's friends. Burns wrote to Anderson from Ellisland on 1st November 1790, asking to be 'set down' as a subscriber, and listing eleven other subscribers he had collected. He also requested two further copies of Anderson's prospectus for the magazine.
