Alloway Monument
Built on the banks of the River Don, it was designed by Thomas Hamilton. The foundation stone was laid on 25th January 1820, by Mr (afterwards Sir) Alexander Boswell, with full masonic honours. It was opened on 4th July 1823. The cost - just over three thousand, three hundred and fifty pounds - was met by public subscription. The monument consists of 'a three-sided basement storey supporting a Greek peristyle'. The three-sided nature of the base was designed to symbolise the three divisions of Ayrshire; Cunningham, Kyle and Carrick. The influence is predominantly Greek. The bust of the poet on the terrace on the southern part of the monument was presented by the sculptor Patric Park, in 1847. The surrounding garden contains Thom's statues of 'Tam o' Shanter' and 'Souter Johnnie'. About fifty thousand people visit the memorial every year.
