Alexander, Claud (1753-1809)
As paymaster general of the East India Company's troops in Bengal, Alexander amassed a fortune and brought the estate of Ballochmyle from the Whitefoord family in 1783. In 1788 he married Helenora, daughter of Sir William Maxwell of Springkell. Alexander was himself the son of a West of Scotland landed proprietor, and the brother of Wilhelmina, the 'Bonnie Lass of Ballochmyle'. He established a cotton mill nearby in partnership with David Dale.
