Ainslie, Miss Rachel (b. 1768)
'Charming' sister of Robert Ainslie. Burns met her and her family when on the Border tour with her brother Robert. He described her in his Journal: 'Her person a little embonpoint, but handsome; her face, particularly her eyes, full of sweetness and good humour - she unites three qualities rarely to be found together - keen, solid penetration; sly, witty observation and remark; and the gentlest, most unaffected female modesty.' When in church hunting for a text on obstinate sinners, Burns presented the following spontaneous lines to her: "Fair maid, you need not take the hint, Nor idle texts pursue: 'Twas guilty sinners that he meant, Not Angels such as you!"
Writing to Robert Ainslie from Mauchline on 23rd July 1787, Burns asked after: 'my friend Rachel, who is as far before Rachel of old, as she was before her blear-eyed sister Leah'.
