Ainslie, Douglas (1771-1850)
Brother of the poet's friend Robert Ainslie. He succeeded his father as writer and land steward on Lord Douglas's estates in Berwickshire, and made a considerable fortune. He later brought Cairnbanki, in Berwickshire. He died at Eden Bank, near Banff. Burns described him in his Journal of his Border tour as 'a clever, fine, promising young fellow' and in a letter of 23rd July 1787, to Robert Ainslie, asked after 'that strapping chield your brother Douglas'.
