Adam, Robert (1728 - 92)
The great Scottish 'classical' architect, whose public buildings include Register House, Edinburgh. He was the second son of William Adam of Maryburgh, in Fife. His four brothers were also architects. He was born in Kirkcaldy and educated at Edinburgh University. When he died, after endowing Britain with many splendid buildings, he was buried in Westminster Abbey. Evidently, from the Ayr burgh accounts, he was paid for a plan of a bridge he had given them. His plan was not used. There was a local tradition that the mason who built the new bridge, Alexander Steven, was also its architect.
