'Adam Armour's Prayer'
Adam Armour (b.1771) was probably Jean Armour's brother, who, along with some other lads, 'stanged', or carried Agnes Wilson, a female fornicator, astride a pole through the streets of Mauchline. He became involved in a breach of the peace, and while evading arrest, met Burns, whose advice he sought. The poet is supposed to have suggested that Armour should find someone to pray for him, and Armour to have replied: 'Just do't yoursel, Burns, I know no one so fit.' The authority for this story is the unreliable and frequently inventive Allan Cunningham. Adam Armour is said to have become a mason, and to have visited Burns at Ellisland.
